BONSAI WISTERIA — Pretty Purple from a Portly Pot in Old Japan

Ca.1898 stereoview by T. ENAMI. From the birth of Japanese photography in the mid 19th Century, and all the way until WW2, T. Enami was the hands-down KING OF THE STEREOVIEW in Old Japan.
Also during that time, his photographs made from 2-D and 3-D images were published in such numbers that more people in the world saw them than they did images by his more famous Meiji-era contemporaries BEATO, STILLFRIED, K. OGAWA, TAMAMAURA, KIMBEI, FARSARI, and others.
Highly effective in his quiet anonymity, his work would end up bridging the gap between the formality of the well-known Meiji-era Masters, and the "new breed" of Pictorial Movement image-makers during the Taisho era — with his own work anchored in all of those styles and more.
Take a peek at his photo-finishing staff putting the finishing touches on a series of 1890s images destined for the tourist trade in Old Yokohama — with a pile of stereoviews such as you see here on the floor and ready to go! : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2494892753/

I created this little bonsai last spring. It was pruned and wired and, a couple of weeks later, potted into this nice tokoname pot.
I removed the wire late this winter and let the first flush of growth strengthen the tree.
This afternoon I rewired the tree and pruned it again. I removed one "large" branch and quite a bit of foliage. The idea is to continue to develop discrete pads and keep the foliage close to the trunk. The tree stands 4.5" above the soil and is 6.5" wide.

After re-potting last year, and it getting knocked over in the wind a few times over the winter, I thought this would never flower again. It’s now June, and i’s finally starting to show some growth!
