Early is an understatement, it was about 4am! The flight was fine, but Willem didn’t enjoy it much cause he had a few beers the night before with George Cole. After arriving in Phnom Penh we had some free time before our bus left for Siem Reap, so we sat around and I read while Willem tried avoiding eye contact with the local kids otherwise they beg for money. When the time for us to depart came closer, we had coca’s at a local shop, rather avoiding the food – there were a lot of flies. And soon we were on the bus and on our way to Siem Reap. At the first bus stop, we got out to stretch our legs but little did we know the locals would beg or try selling either fruit or spiders, crickets or other insects to us. To my disgust, or maybe rather amazement, some of the peops on the bus bought some insect snacks for themselves and munched away when we departed again. There was a boy at the stop too, who I’ll never forget…or at least, not the way he irritated Willem. “Siem Reap?” he’d ask. “Yes” replied Willem, “Siem Reap”. “Same same” said the boy, and with a quizical look, all Willem and I could do is shrug and wonder what on earth that means.
