No matter, the hotel guy eventually flagged down a taxi on the nearest main road (leaving his desk unattended.) and the cabbie broke the speed limit by about 40kph. Pete managed to leave his passport by an internet terminal at the airport but luckily someone found it before complete panic. We alighted at Ho Chi Minh Airport. Not a patch on Changi, but Immigration was quick and painless, unlike Barb’s previous visit in 2001, when she was at least 2 hours in a queue. We caught a cab from the airport to the hotel for US. Having been alerted by guide books we avoided the taxi scalpers and queued for an official airport cab. We spent some time wandering about the town on our own, explored the huge Ben Thanh market just up the road from the hotel, where for lunch Barb had tiny crunchy prawns in sweet chilli sauce, AND 2 cold Vietnamese rolls. Yummy. The range of good quality handicrafts was amazing, and we had our first taste of ‘What is Madam looking for ?’. Dessert was a delicious ice cream up the road. After examining the bill we quickly learned that finger-wipers in sealed plastic packets are not free. 5000 dong apiece (30c) .
